Amadeus Purcell
Founder & Creative Director
Amadeus is a photographer and creative director based in Eden, North Carolina, and the founder of Purcell House. His editorial photography has appeared in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, WWD, and Grazia, and he serves as US Creative Director of Licence Magazine, a Paris-based publication. After a decade photographing in New York, he returned home to establish Purcell House, named for a middle name carried across three generations of his family, and now directs the studio's commissioned work and the gallery's exhibition program.
Our Story
Purcell House is a professional portrait studio and fine art gallery in downtown Eden, North Carolina, and the first Black-owned studio and gallery in the city. The studio aims to revive the art of portraiture, making images of the moments a family intends to keep. The gallery serves as a permanent home for the work of Black artists, presenting exhibitions and representing artists working in and from the American South.
Both operate under one roof at 637 Washington Street, across the street from the barbershop the founder's father has run for years. Portrait sessions are by appointment. The gallery is open to the public, and works are available for acquisition throughout each exhibition.
